A flower is gol, a tree is derakht, a leaf is barg and a garden is bagh. A pot on the balcony or a walk in the park is enough to use them, because the child can touch what the word names. Pronunciation is approximate and written for English speakers; accents vary, so ask your relatives how they say them.
Two things worth knowing
- Baghcheh is bagh plus the small-thing ending -cheh, so it means a little garden.
- Goldan is gol (flower) plus -dan (a holder), the same ending as in namakdan, a salt shaker.
Easy ways to practise
- Plant something: name the daneh, the khak and the goldan as you fill the pot.
- Watering: say ab and the plant's name each time.
- On a walk: point at a derakht, pick up a barg and say it together.
We have not found a study showing which method works best for heritage-language children, so treat these as ideas to try rather than a programme.
