Pronunciation is approximate and written for English speakers; accents vary, so ask your relatives how they say them.
Two things worth knowing
- Anar (pomegranate) and hendevaneh (watermelon) are the two fruits families put on the table for Yalda.
- The word for strawberry, tut-farangi, is built from tut (berry) and farangi (foreign), so it can be taught as two small words.
Easy ways to practise
- Fruit bowl: name one fruit in Persian each time someone picks it up.
- Shopping: let the child find the sib or the moz at the store.
- Video call: a grandparent holds up a fruit and the child says the word.
We have not found a study showing which method works best for heritage-language children, so treat these as ideas to try rather than a programme.
