Pronunciation is approximate and written for English speakers; accents vary, so ask your relatives how they say them.
Easy ways to practise
- Snack time: ask for the sabz grapes or the zard cheese.
- Picture books: point at a page and name one color in Persian.
- Clothes: name the color of each sock while getting dressed.
- I spy: "I spy something ghermez."

How do you say red in Persian?
قرمز (ghermez). Blue is آبی (aabi), yellow is زرد (zard) and green is سبز (sabz).
Are there two words for black?
Yes. سیاه (siyaah) and مشکی (meshki) are both used; families differ in which they prefer.
Do I need to read Persian to teach colors?
No. The pronunciation guide is enough to start, and a relative can say the words on video.
Are the colors the same in Dari and Tajik?
Many are similar, but accents and spelling differ. We only checked the Persian of Iran here.
