Pronunciation is approximate and written for English speakers; accents vary, so ask your relatives how they say them.
Two things worth knowing
- Shir means both milk and lion; the context tells you which. See animals in Persian for kids.
- Tokhm-morgh is literally "hen's egg" (tokhm = egg, morgh = hen), so it can be taught as two small words.
Easy ways to practise
- At the table: name one item in Persian each time someone passes it.
- Asking: let the child ask for ab or nan in Persian before getting it.
- Video call: a grandparent shows what is for lunch and the child says the word.
We have not found a study showing which method works best for heritage-language children, so treat these as ideas to try rather than a programme.
