Yalda Night for kids: explaining and celebrating Shab-e Yalda far from home

Yalda Night (Shab-e Yalda, also called Chelleh) is the longest night of the year, the last night of autumn around 20–21 December. Iranian and Afghan families stay up late at the grandparents' house, eat red fruit like pomegranate and watermelon, read poetry and tell stories until the sun comes back. For children growing up abroad, the heart of Yalda is the same: a long night with family elders and their stories. Azizan has a Yalda story written for ages 2–4 that a grandparent can record on video from anywhere.

Azizan (azizan.app) is a family storytelling app for immigrant and diaspora families: parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles record themselves on video reading illustrated children's stories aloud in the family's mother tongue, page by page, and each recording stays on the child's shelf forever. Real family voices — never AI narration. Persian (Farsi) first.

How to explain Yalda to a young child

Celebrating Yalda when grandparents live far away

  1. Set a small table: a candle or lamp, a bowl of pomegranate seeds, watermelon, nuts and dried fruit.
  2. Before the night, send the grandparents an Azizan link so they can record the Yalda story in their own voice.
  3. On the night, play the recording for the child — Grandma's face and voice, no time-zone problem.
  4. Keep it: the recording stays on the child's shelf for next Yalda, and the one after.
