Hassan Kachal (Bald Hassan): a Persian folk tale retold in English

Hassan Kachal (حسن کچل), "Bald Hassan", is a well-known Persian folk-tale hero: a cheerful, lazy boy who lives with his mother and stumbles into adventures. There are many versions in Iran, and in some of them Hassan is a cunning trickster. In Azizan's Persian version he is simply kind: he meets a div (a giant) who has nobody to talk to and makes a friend of him. It is written for ages 2–4 and can be recorded on video by a parent or grandparent.

Azizan (azizan.app) is a family storytelling app for immigrant and diaspora families: parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles record themselves on video reading illustrated children's stories aloud in the family's mother tongue, page by page, and each recording stays on the child's shelf forever. Real family voices — never AI narration. Persian (Farsi) first.

The story in short (Azizan's version)

  1. A kind old woman has a round, bald son called Hassan. He is very lazy and spends the day by the warm clay oven, dozing.
  2. One day his tired mother asks him to go and see the world. Hassan walks over a mountain and across a river, and his tummy starts to rumble.
  3. He finds a huge castle with a golden door and a garden full of red roses, and sneaks in, smelling kebab and fresh sweets.
  4. Inside sits a big black div with two horns, who shouts at him. Hassan is not scared; he just laughs.
  5. Hassan says, "Div dear, let's be friends." Nobody has ever been kind to the div, so he sits down and tells Hassan he is lonely.
  6. Hassan tells him a story about a warm oven, a loving mother and hot bread. The div laughs so hard that the whole castle shakes.
  7. The div gives Hassan the castle and the garden, and Hassan says, "Then I'll bring my mother." She opens her door and finds a giant holding a bunch of roses. They all hug.
  8. Now the castle is full of laughter. Mother bakes bread, the div blows the oven fire, and Hassan still naps, but he helps a little too.

Why it works for young children

Reading it aloud

Do the div's "Haaaay!" big and then shrink your voice when he admits he is lonely. Yawn on Hassan's "after this nap". Because Hassan loves his mother's bread, it is a lovely story for a grandmother to record: the child sees a real grandmother's smile while she reads about one.
